Hornblower Class Blog

It's been another busy week!
In maths this week we have been learning about weight and mass. We have explored grams and kilograms, and weighed some everyday objects in class. Hannah was most amused to discover her shoe has a mass of 160g. Lots of children related their learning to baking at home. Practising reading scales whilst measuring ingredients for delicious bakes is a great way to support maths learning in school!
In English, the children have completed their independent writes. Last week we imagined Rusty the dog had got up to all sorts of mischief in the classroom, cloakroom and toilets. This week the class used adverbs and descriptive language to imagine the response of their unfortunate teacher finding this chaos! Honor decided he would be 'really angry'! Ophelia, however, decided he would be delighted because he would clean up so well!
We've enjoyed learning more about the remarkable life of Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Through his expeditions he has raised over £6.2 million for charity. This week we have been putting his whole life into chronological order. The class described his expeditions as 'amazing', 'incredible' and 'really brave'.
Linked to this, all children have taken home a sponsorship form with the following message:
Year 2 have been learning about Sir Ranulph Fiennes and his amazing expeditions to raise money for charity, as part of our Learning Means The World topic. To celebrate, we're going to take on some active challenges on Thursday 3rd April to raise money for Ripon Walled Garden, a local charity that supports people with learning difficulties.
We're sending home a sponsorship form tonight. If you feel able to support us, please send in any sponsorship money with the forms by next Wednesday. The purpose is to continue our discussions about supporting our local community, and not to focus on the amount children can raise. All the children will enjoy the activities, regardless of sponsorship.
We hope you have a lovely weekend, and we look forward to having some very active fun next Thursday!
