Ribble's Class Blog

What a busy and brilliant week it has been in Year 5!

In Maths this week we have continued to explore the world of decimals. At the start of the week, we have been practising adding and subtracting decimals with the same and different numbers of decimal places. Then, towards the end of the week, we have been looking at translations of shapes and the children worked very hard to do this accurately. It was challenging at first, but Davids said that he is looking forward to showing 'what he can do' in the summer assessment (which will include some decimals).

In English, we are very excited to say that we have started a new non-fiction book. It is called 'Our Planet' and it is absolutely fascinating. We have looked at the contrast of informal and formal language, the page layout and the use of tier 2 and tier 3 vocabulary. Skye said, 'It is so interesting. I am looking forward to seeing what else we learn about using this book because the world is so big!'

In RE, we embarked on an exploration of Jewish festivals. We were learning about the significance of the different celebrations throughout the Jewish year and made notes on the four main festivals, which are Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Passover and Sukkor. The highlight for many was definitely getting to try some of the foods that are associated with these festivals. Alex even said it was his favourite RE lesson to date!

The fun didn't stop there! In science, we had a lot of fun becoming scientists, and we conducted an experiment where we melted ice, ice and salt and chocolate. We were investigating which of these melted the quickest by surrounding them in warm water and recording the temperature every minute. The children did an amazing job at using scientific vocabulary to describe the process!
