Spa Class Blog

Welcome back from the Easter break!

We have started our new Learning Means the World Unit, ‘What on Earth.’ We have started to look at caterpillars and butterflies and talked about and sequenced the life cycle of a butterfly.

We have created caterpillar shape printing, threaded pasta to make caterpillars and made folded butterfly paintings. In our small world area, we have made a minibeast garden and have enjoyed building homes for the different minibeasts. We have also noticed minibeasts in our outdoor area. We have found bees, woodlice, spiders and worms.

In English we read the story ‘The very Hungry Caterpillar.’ We joined in to retell the story and could name the different foods the caterpillar ate. We worked hard to sound out the words to write a caterpillar shopping list!

In Maths we have looked at measures and have used the balance scales. We talked about why the balance scales moved when we placed different objects on each side. We have been using the words heavier and lighter to describe the weight of the objects.

In Phonics we have been singing the nursery rhyme ‘Incy Wincy Spider.’ We had fun singing the song fast, slow, loud and quiet. We identified rhyming words and tapped the syllables in words. We listened for the ‘J’ initial sound in words and could sort picture cards into words that started with the ‘J’ sound and words that started with a different sound. We have also been practising our oral blending of words.

We have also welcomed a new Teaching Assistant to Spa Class. Mrs Barlow will be in Spa Class every day. She has had a lovely first week meeting and working with all the children.
