Hornblower Class Blog
Maps, Division and Dragons!
Unbelievably, it's the end of half-term and halfway through the year! Hornblower have been very busy this week! In Maths, Freddy tells us, "We've been learning all about division. We can use grouping or sharing." We've spent a lot of time exploring this practically, using counters to build our conceptual understanding.
In English, we wrote a class version of The Boy Who Cried Ninja, featuring a mischievous frog and some polka-dot underpants! This week, we planned and are now writing our own independent versions. We've been focusing on using different conjunctions and descriptive adjectives, and even including adverbs like silently and carefully in our work!
On Safer Internet Day, we returned to a previous class discussion about what is safe to share online. We also looked at issues such as online scams and the importance of not sharing private information. The class then made 'profiles' of themselves and discussed which information should not be shared online.
In Learning Means The World, we've been building our locational knowledge of the United Kingdom. In pairs, we made large maps of the UK, labelling the four countries, capital cities, Ripon itself and the surrounding seas. These are now proudly displayed in the classroom. See below for some of our final work. Fenn reminded us that the line between two countries is called a 'border'. It was great to make our own maps, as we had to consider carefully the shape of our country and the relative positions of different places.
In PE we have begun learning some dances with Mr Banks for an upcoming dance competition. Hannah shares, "We were knights fighting dragons!"
Finally, in Art, Lilly tells us, "We are using hatching and shading to draw Paddington's suitcase."
Thank you for all your hard work both in class and at home. We hope you have a fun and restful half-term, and look forward to seeing you after the holidays!
