Religious Education (RE)

As a church school, we ensure that children receive their entitlement for teaching and learning in RE. Religious education is planned for at least one hour every week across the school year and there are 2 additional RE themed days during the year - Advent Day and Lent Day. 

Our RE curriculum has been designed around The North Yorkshire Agreed Syllabus and the Understanding Christianity materials. Wherever possible, the school’s Christian Value for the half term has been used to underpin the choice for the unit.  

Pupils learn to weigh up the value of wisdom from different sources; to develop and express their insights in response, and to agree or disagree respectfully. Respect is at the heart of everything we do in school so in developing our RE curriculum, we have considered how, through learning about a range faiths and spiritual beliefs, mutual respect, understanding and tolerance can be deepened.

Faith coverage: 
Nursery & Reception: Children will encounter Christianity and other faiths, as part of their growing sense of self, their community and their place within it.  

Year 1: Christianity and Islam

Year 2: Christianity and Islam

Year 3: Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Non-religious views   

Year 4: Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Non-religious views  

Year 5: Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Non-religious views  

Year 6: Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, non-religious views

Our RE curriculum is also enriched by a variety of trips out to sacred places and by visitors coming into school to share their own traditions and beliefs.

RE offers distinct and valid opportunities to promote pupils’ interdisciplinary learning and spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. It contributes dynamically to children and young people’s education by provoking challenging questions about meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, ultimate reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human.

Pupils learn about and from religions in local, national and global contexts, to discover, explore and consider different answers to these questions. Dedicated RE lessons, in partnership with whole school approaches, allow for timely and sensitive responses to be made to unforeseen events of a religious, moral or philosophical nature, including natural phenomena resulting in humanitarian responses whether local, national or global.
