Welcome to the Skell Class blog!
In English we read the story ‘Sam Plants a Sunflower.’ We enjoyed the story and described the sunflowers using words from the book, such as ‘withering.’ We labelled the sunflower parts and discussed how roots help to feed the plant.
We have sequenced and labelled the life cycle of a sunflower and wrote sentences to describe each part.
In Maths we have been focusing on ordinality and considering where numbers to 10 are in relation to each other. We ordered towers of cubes to 10, and discussed how we know where a number comes on a number track. Ida said, “Two comes after one and before three.” We played a number game using the dice and puppets. The children worked hard to say how many jumps along the track were needed and what number the puppet would land on.
In Phonics we have recapped reading and writing longer words - such as carpark, bedroom and pocket. We have remembered to chunk up the word to make it easier to read and write. We have practised the tricky words: are, sure, pure, into, she, he, we, me, be.
In Learning Means the World we have looked at the four seasons and named them. We discussed how the season changes during the springtime and focussed on the new life it brings.
In RE last week we looked at how Christians celebrate the birth of a baby through Baptism. This week we looked at the Islamic faith and discussed the celebration of Aqiqah. Orla remembered they shaved the baby’s head during the celebration. Jessica remembered they weighed the baby’s hair and gave that weight in gold to a charity. Theodora remembered they told family and friends the name of the baby at the end of the celebration.
This week in provision, we have created sunflower collage pictures, labelled a sunflower, made junk model flowers, created a garden and map in the construction area, played a game of phonics dominoes and made five in different ways. We have also started to plant sunflower seeds in the outdoor area.
