Wensley Blog Post

We have had such an amazing week!
We have had an amazing week here in Wensley! As part of our Learning Means the World topic on conservation, we wanted to help out in our local community. We got in touch with the Friends of Hell Wath and they suggested that we would be a brilliant help doing some 'Balsam Bashing' for them. If you are not familiar with the term, it is where we help take out Himalayan Balsam plants before they produce seeds. They are an invasive non-native species that prevents our own beautiful wild flowers from growing. As you can see, we were happy to help! The whole of Year 5 was fantastic and really got stuck in removing hundreds and hundreds of them. Some of our balsam piles were bigger than the children! Will said, 'I really loved it and wanted to do it all day!' We also used our walk to complete some geography fieldwork in the form of a traffic survey and a chatterbox to show how we can use grid references and how places change over the seasons and longer periods of time. We finished our day with a lovely play in the park with all our friends. The children were enthusiastic and very well-behaved; it was a wonderful day of learning and fun!
We have also been very busy learning about volume in Maths and having a great time measuring 3D objects with cubes. We have been estimating and comparing volumes too.
In English, we are just about to begin our independent poetry writing that will tell the story of Wing. We are going to write a variety of poems that will include free verse, limericks and shape poetry.
We are all very excited to be a small part of the Year 6 production of The Wizard of Oz. Wensley have worked very hard to learn all the songs and actions and we are looking forward to doing a great job for Year 6 next week!
