Wensley's Class Blog

Following and Giving Instructions, and Place Value to 1,000,000!

Wensley class continues to really impress us with their approach to learning. They've embraced the particularly exciting parts of our lessons and have also shown they can focus and show determination to do their best. We've all been very impressed with their progress!

In English, our text is Incredible Edibles by Stefan Gates, which contains some very wild and wonderful recipes. Through this text, we'll be learning to write clear and detailed instructions. To practice, the class first had to follow instructions carefully to make chocolate lollies, and then write the instructions they followed as accurately as they could. They also practised by giving each other instructions to draw animals using only shape names and positional language. Finally, they turned the tables and instructed Mr. Lynn to make a sandwich. They did very well, although it reminded them to be very specific to avoid excessive use of spread and to ensure the right end of the knife was used!

In Maths, our first unit is Number and Place Value. We have explored the place value of each digit up to the hundred thousands and learned how to add and subtract by changing the value of different digits. The class has worked hard to apply the same principles from their Year 4 learning to greater numbers.

In our Learning Means The World topic, we have learned the meaning of 'orbit' and explored the relative size of the Earth, Moon, and Sun. We enjoyed drawing each of them to scale and discovered that if the Moon had a diameter of only 1 centimetre, the Sun's would be approximately 4 metres!
