Wonderful Wensley Class Blog

Another busy, busy week!

English

In English, we've been examining the key themes of fairy tales, which led to some fascinating discussions. Liv and Miracle were particularly fascinated to discover that Frozen is based on 'The Snow Queen' by Hans Christian Andersen, who also originally wrote 'The Little Mermaid'. We explored the concept of the 'Power of Three' and debated whether fairy tales simply show good versus evil, or sometimes have a more complicated morality. During a word study to describe settings, Lizzie shared how much she enjoyed learning some new adjectives that she's looking to use in her writing!

Maths

In Maths, we've been combining column subtraction with the estimating and rounding we practised in the previous unit. Once again, although the class found this challenging, they worked incredibly hard and made a fantastic effort to master these areas.

Learning Means The World

Our 'Learning Means The World' topic saw us refreshing our knowledge of e-safety. We made posters containing key reminders, such as 'Think Before You Click', 'Private Information Stays Private', and always 'Tell Someone' if you encounter anything you are unsure of.

The picture above is of some of our Science work from earlier in the month, where the class explored why we have day and night.

A huge well done to our children who represented Year 5 at the Netball tournament! It sounded like a very positive experience, and they returned with very happy faces. A special thank you also to Mr Banks who came in especially on Tuesday afternoon to give the team some extra practice time during P.E. to help hone their skills.

Homework

Finally, thank you so much for all the pictures (and videos!) for the Extreme Reading Challenge—please keep sending them in! We've also received some really well-presented pieces of work in your books since the homework was set.

We are having a real focus in class on using Reading Plus to support building comprehension and vocabulary skills, so please encourage your child to use this at home if you can. We've already seen great progress from some of our most regular users.
