Skell Class Blog

We have had a very busy week in Skell class!
In English, we read the story ‘Whatever Next.’ The baby bear wanted to go to the moon. We talked about where we would like to go. Theo said, ‘I want to go to planet Bong,’ Cooper said, ‘I want to go to the moon too,’ Alfie said, ‘I want to go to space.’
We took turns to take on the role of baby bear and thought of and asked questions and sequenced pictures from the story and retold the story using the story language from the book.
In Maths, we have been counting and finding out how many objects there are. We have continued to use the word ‘equal,’ and were able to make equal amounts. We built and counted towers to 10 and were able to say how many bricks we had used. We have also focussed on circles and triangles and sorted them into groups. We looked at Kandinsky’s circle and triangle artwork and created our own.
In Phonics, we have been looking at graphemes z, qu, ch. We have read the tricky words ‘no, go, to, into.’ We have sounded out and blended words such as buzz, naps, chip and rich. We have read captions, such as ‘run and tell mum,’ and written cvc words, such as back, run, had.
In Learning Means the World we have been thinking about teddy bears. We have looked at old bears and compared them to teddy bears now. Tommy explained ‘The bear does not have much hair, he has been cuddled too much.’ Ivar explained that new bears are softer and cuddly.’ We found out the first bear was made in 1902.
We have created our own collage bears and explained our reasons for choosing our materials. Vinny suggested using feathers because they are soft. Etta wanted to use cotton wool as it is fluffy.
In RE we have continued to look at the nativity story. We talked about how every year Christians celebrate Jesus’ birthday on Christmas day.
In provision, we have created our own junk model rockets, built rockets using wooden construction bricks and mobilo. We have written lists of food baby bear took for his picnic on the moon, made our own ‘Whatever Next’ books, painted pictures of rockets, created moon crater paintings and enjoyed writing the ‘s’ in the playdough. Outside, we enjoyed using our new sand tray, digging holes and hiding the animals.
