Spa Class Blog

This week Spa Class have focused on construction toys… Can we fix it? Yes we can!

In English we continued reading “Where’s My Teddy?” - our words of the week were “terrified” and “zoom”. We recapped singing our Silly Soup song, this helps the children hear rhyming words and find the objects. We drew a story map of what happened in the book, then we put on our theatre hats and acted out our story! We had Sophie as the Big Bear, Daisy as Freddy and Jaxon and Jacob as the teddies. Everyone enjoyed joining in and helping tell the story together, we had some fantastic waving trees and winding paths! This week we had books brought in on unicorns, Jim Jam and geese, which we enjoyed listening to and sharing.

In Phonics we learnt the phoneme ‘p’ for peg, pencil and pizza! Our nursery rhyme was Mary, Mary, quite contrary, the children enjoyed learning the new rhyme and finding out the meaning of new words such as the “little maids” in the garden and "cockle shells”. We also had our first trip with Bertha the Bus, and this week we saw a penguin!

For Maths we continued learning all about two! The Numberblock two had hidden lots of the numeral two around the room and the children had a lot of fun finding them and matching them to the list. We have continued strengthening our subitising skills for two, and learning how two is made up. Hayden said that “two is a one and another one”. We have been practising growing our numbers on our fingers to show their progression.

In RE we continued learning about why Christians perform Nativity plays at Christmas. After listening to our RE Story this week we listened to some Christmas Carols - Little Donkey and Away in a Manger. We discussed what the message of each song was, Sophie said that the “Little Donkey is going to Baby Jesus” and Sephy said “it’s so cute!”. We talked about what our favourite things about Christmas are, Jaxon said “family coming and dinosaur presents”, Elijah said “going on holiday at Christmas and Santa bringing presents” and Daisy added “the Christmas tree!”. We have been busy practising for our Christmas show, I have been very impressed with the ‘big voices’ which the children are using to sing our songs in preparation for the show!

This week in Learning Means the World we got a letter from Bob the Builder asking for our help! He challenged Spa Class to build some new houses for the three little pigs whose house had been blown down by “the Big Bad Wolf!”. Bob left us two things to help us with our quest and the first was in our Curiosity Cube; Sephy spotted it was “something blue” and Theo said it could help us “to fix taps”... it was a blue spanner! The second thing was a tool box full of Duplo bricks to build strong houses. All the children worked together to build lots of houses. Theo had the idea to “combine them together”, Jaxon thought “We should have a scarecrow to scare the wolf”, Jacob added “The wolf won’t be able to fit if we have a cone in the chimney” and Rosie said her trampoline “is going to boing him off back to the wood!”. We have also started making our own cardboard houses this week, exploring combining materials, and next week we will be decorating them! This week we have also focused on our listening skills, and the children have worked very hard on listening to each other during Spa Bear circle time and in provision.
