This week in Nidd

This week has included some very challenging new learning!

This week, we took a big step forward in our multiplication journey. We moved away from basic tables and started using the expanded method to multiply a two-digit number by a one-digit number.

The children learned how to "partition" the number into tens and ones first, making the big calculation much easier to manage. They did a brilliant job!

In English, we have been identifying and comparing:

  • Simple sentences: One main idea (The sun shone).
  • Compound sentences: Two ideas joined by a conjunction, for example ‘and’ or ‘but’
  • Complex sentences: Using a conjunction such as like "because", "although", or "while" to add a subordinating clause to a main clause.

Our RE lessons were very moving this week. We studied the significant events of Holy Week and imagined what it would have been like to be there.

The children wrote heart-felt diary entries from the perspective of Mary (the mother of Jesus). We discussed how her feelings would have changed from the joy of Palm Sunday to the sadness of Good Friday. The empathy shown in their writing was truly wonderful to see.

For our History focus, we travelled back in time to the Ancient African city of Benin. We explored what daily life was like for the people living there.

In PE, we started our new Netball unit! The focus this week was all about the chest pass. We practiced keeping our elbows in, stepping into the pass, and "flicking" our wrists to make sure the ball reached our partner accurately.
