Litton Class Blog

Welcome back to the Litton Class blog! It has been an incredibly busy, thought-provoking, and creative week for Year 6. From mastering the art of villainy (in writing!) to reflecting on profound historical events, the children have impressed us every step of the way.

Here is what we have been up to:

🦸 English: Heroes and Villains

We have officially begun writing our "Guides on How to Become a Super Hero or Villain." The creativity flowing in the classroom has been fantastic. We have been focusing heavily on using modal and imperative verbs to give our instructions authority, as well as using a wide range of sentence structures to keep the reader engaged.

We have seen some brilliant examples of how to hook a reader:

  • Keira did a wonderful job using rhetorical questions to include her reader, asking: "Have you ever dreamed of flying high in the sky? Do you dream about being indestructible?"
  • Chelsea came up with some fantastic, catchy subheadings for her work, including "Crest Woman: A Step-by-Step Guide to becoming your villain!" and the very clever "Dress to Depress!"

Maths: Mastering Percentages

In Maths, we have been tackling the percentage of amounts. We focused on the strategy of finding 10% (by dividing by 10) and 1% (by dividing by 100) of any given number. Once we mastered that, we used those building blocks to solve much more complex examples.

It has been great to see the children’s confidence grow. A special shout-out to Alex, who admitted he found this a bit tricky to begin with, but stuck with it and is now finding it much easier. Great resilience, Alex!

🌍 Learning Means the World: Nelson Mandela

Our topic work has moved on to look at the inspirational Nelson Mandela. The children created presentations looking at key aspects of his life and asked some incredibly insightful questions about his timeline.

We spent some time listening to the song Free Nelson Mandela. The class couldn't believe he was in jail for 27 years yet remained so positive and forgiving. We discussed what a true role model he is.

Freddie was particularly inspired; he remembered a book we have in school—The Book of Joy by Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama. Because of Freddie's connection, we shared the book and looked at how Archbishop Tutu and Nelson Mandela worked in many ways toward the same causes.

🕯️ RE: A Special Visit

Finally, in RE, we were privileged to visit the Cathedral to attend a Holocaust Memorial Service. It was a moving experience, and the children thoroughly enjoyed the visit, showing great respect throughout.

We were incredibly proud to receive a special email from the staff at the Cathedral afterward, who wrote:

"Thank you so much for bringing so many pupils to our Holocaust Memorial Service it was wonderful to see you all. Your pupils were so thankful and appreciative it was very moving to hear their comments."

Well done, Year 6. You have represented our school beautifully this week.
