This week we have been exploring crusty crustaceans!
In English we continued reading “Don’t worry little crab” - our words of the week were “whoosh” and “enormous”. We talked about going on adventures and where you might travel, and discussed who makes us feel brave when we experience something new, linking it with our book. Robyn remembered that Little Crab was “nervous” and Theo added that “Big Crab helped”. Elijah said that when he learnt to swim, “Mummy helped” him to feel brave, Daisy added that a “floaty helped” her to feel brave when swimming for the first time. Jaxon said that when he went on a “plane to fly, Mummy packed snacks” which made him feel better. Later in the week, we designed our own underwater creature based on the ones which we saw in “Don’t worry little crab”. Daisy drew a "mermaid and a coral reef", Marwa a "little crab with two eyes", and Robyn drew "a fish with a smiley mouth!". This week we celebrated National Storytelling Week; we read lots of books, including a very special book about reading books to dinosaurs, shared by Mrs Bell-Walker!
In Phonics we learnt the phoneme ‘k’ for ketchup and kangaroo! Our nursery rhyme was Pat-a-cake. We enjoyed doing the actions along with the song, especially “patting it” and “pricking it”! On this week’s visit with Bertha the Bus, we saw a kite!
We started learning about the number five in Maths this week. We had a visit from Numerblock five who brought us a number and numeral hunt for the number 5 which we enjoyed doing; this helps the children to identify the number 5 pictorially as well as in its most abstract form – as a numeral! We practised drawing the number 5 in the air, and even designed a T-shirt with “5” on it. We are looking forward to exploring more about five next week!
In RE we continued learning about Salvation and explored the meaning of the Palm Cross. We looked at the Palm leaf that the Palm Cross is made from, and thought about what the Palm Cross reminds Christians of. Theo said "Jesus died on the cross" and Jacob added, "we wave them and say hosanna".
This week’s Learning Means the World we started learning about crustaceans – in particular, crusty crabs! In our Curiosity Cube we explored shells and discussed what creatures might have lived in them. Sophie thought “a small octopus might live there”, Saimoni said “I can hear water” and Robyn said “A crab might live in there” - Hayden added “It pinched me with its pincers!”. We discussed scientific vocabulary with our wow words being exoskeleton and decapod! We then used our new knowledge about crabs when creating crabs in provision. We enjoyed using stamps, adding 10 legs onto our crabs, and then the faces. Spa Bear is very impressed with how everyone is working together to turn our classroom into an underwater experience!
To help focus learning through using our resources at school, we are encouraging our Nursery children to leave their own toys at home. To aid this transition, please help us by supporting your child to leave their toys at home - thank you!
