Wensley Class Blog

Digital Skills Workshop and Super Science!

It has been a typically jam-packed week in Wensley! On Monday, Amelia from Quickline broadband came to talk to the class about digital skills. We covered screen time, AI imagery, scam websites and more in a highly thought-provoking hour. Even certain teachers did not spot one AI image of an ice cream! This fitted well with our current PSHE discussions about the potential positives and negatives of technology in relation to our health and wellbeing.

In English, we spent Tuesday morning writing a diary from the point of view of Ernest Shackleton, when his ship, the Endurance, had been trapped in ice for several months. We focused on writing in the correct tense and applying the understanding of parenthesis that we have previously worked on. Ivy brilliantly noted that Shackleton felt huge pressure to look after his crew, in the same way that his ship was under immense pressure from the ice.

In Learning Means the World, Hemanika really enjoyed making comic strips to show the impact of nurdles on the environment, calling it "fun and educational." As she explains, "Nurdles are micro-plastic pellets that get caught in circular currents in the oceans called gyres. Sea life eat them and then starve and die."

Matthew loved orienteering with Mr Banks on Wednesday. He said it is "fun, and you learn how to read maps!" I have certainly rarely seen as much excitement in finding cones in the school grounds!

In Science, we used magnets and rulers to measure the "jump" that magnetic objects make towards a magnet. Josh enjoyed the fact it showed that not all metals are magnetic. Mr Lynn learnt that 1p coins are magnetic because they are only copper-plated nowadays and have a steel core!

We hope you have a lovely weekend.
