Nidd news

We have been out and about doing our learning this week!

On Tuesday afternoon, all of Year 3 went to Bethel Church for an RE workshop, learning about the life of Jesus. We heard from lots of people who were part of Jesus' story before having the chance to create mimes of some of the significant events in his life.

This week we discovered our New English text, 'Arthur and the Golden Rope' by Joe Todd-Stanton. This story is a perfect example of a quest narrative, which usually follows a specific pattern.

Features of a Quest Story:

  • The Call to Adventure: The hero leaves their home to solve a problem.
  • The Journey: Travelling through dangerous or unknown lands.
  • The Obstacles: Facing monsters, riddles, or difficult weather.
  • Magical Help: Finding tools or companions to help along the way.

To get into the spirit of the story, we brainstormed our own magical objects. Some chose cloaks of invisibility for stealth, while others chose enchanted compasses that always lead to the truth.

We continued our work on fractions, moving past the basics to look at non-unit fractions.

While a unit fraction always has a 1 as the numerator, a non-unit fraction has a numerator greater than 1.

  • The Denominator: Tells us how many equal parts the whole is divided into.

  • The Numerator: Tells us exactly how many of those parts we are talking about.

Our exploration of the world's rainforests took us straight to South America. We learnt that the Amazon Rainforest is so massive that it helps regulate the entire planet's oxygen and carbon levels!
