Esk News!

Welcome to Esk's weekly news!
We were really excited this week in Learning Means the World because we learnt about the Maya civilisation.
Here are some facts we learnt:
The Maya civilisation began in Mesoamerica, which is an area of land made up of Mexico and Central America. This happened between 2000 BC - 1600 AD. Did you know during this time England went through the Stone, Bronze and Iron Age?
The Maya people had an interesting diet! They ate monkeys, dogs, guinea pigs, fish, armadillos, peppers, corn and many more!
The Maya people invented the idea of 0.
The rich people drank a chocolate drink which comes from cocoa beans. Chocolate drinks were also drunk at special occasions such as weddings.
Normal people lived in oval houses which had a thatched roof. The houses only had one room and they would sleep at the back of the house. They buried their family members under their houses! The rich people lived in the ceremonial centre in palaces.
The Maya people believed in many gods, each representing a different part of life. These gods had to be pleased so Maya communities made offerings to them in the form of sacrifices.
