Swale Class Blog

This week in Year 4 Swale, we have been busy learners across all of our subjects!
English
At the start of the week in English, we focused on using expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbials to make our writing more descriptive and interesting. For example, instead of writing the forest, we improved it to the dark, twisted forest filled with whispering shadows. We also experimented with moving our sentences around by starting with fronted adverbials. Early in the morning, the golden sun shone through the trees.Towards the end of the week, we began reading our new text The Lost Happy Endings by Carol Ann Duffy. We noticed the wonderful adjectives she uses and thought about the effect they have on the reader.
Maths
In Maths, we worked hard to finish our Place Value unit. We have been rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. Although it was tricky at times, we showed lots of focus and resilience, especially when explaining our answers carefully.
Guided Reading
In Guided Reading, we used inference and retrieval to explore how characters’ feelings changed throughout the stories we read. We also celebrated finishing Squishy McFluff! Everyone is now very excited to discover our next guided reading book.
Learning Means the World
Our music lessons have been filled with rhythm and energy. We continued to learn about tempo and how it changes the mood of music. On Wednesday, we were lucky to welcome a special visitor, musician Freddie Cleary, who played songs with different tempos. We discussed how the tempo made us feel – sometimes calm and thoughtful, sometimes lively and ready to dance! James said he especially enjoyed dancing to the faster pieces. It was also an amazing chance to ask questions about becoming a musician.
RE
In RE, we continued our learning about the People of God. We looked closely at the promises made in a Christian wedding and compared them to the covenant made with Noah. This helped us think about the importance of promises and trust.
