Swale News

A busy week in Swale!

English
In English, we are coming to the end of our persuasive writing unit. The children have been choosing two different objects with opposing emotions and writing a persuasive letter to their owner. They have been practising key skills such as rhetorical questions, fronted adverbials, personification and other persuasive techniques.

Our objects have had a lot to say! We have disgruntled coat pegs complaining about carrying heavy bags and coats all day, bored school shoes fed up with endlessly walking school corridors instead of having fun, neglected dresses upset that they are only worn on special occasions and desperate to climb trees and play in the park, and disgusted lunch boxes begging for the mouldy banana peel to finally be removed!

Maths
In Maths, we are focusing on the formal method of multiplication, multiplying both 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. The children have been working incredibly hard on their times tables. We are encouraging everyone to become a TT Rockstar hero by playing TTRockstars for at least 21 minutes each week, helping to build speed, accuracy and confidence ahead of the multiplication check at the end of the year.

More information will be sent to parents shortly, as there will be an opportunity to join us in class to see how we use TTRockstars and how we support the children with their multiplication skills.

RE
In RE, we have been learning about The Golden Rules and exploring the three important foundations in Sikhism:

  • Naam Japna – Remember God

  • Kirat Karna – Work honestly

  • Vand Chhakna – Share with others

Learning Means the World
In Learning Means the World, we have been studying child labour and slavery in Africa. We learnt that the pinwheel is the symbol of the fight against child labour and have compared slavery in Ancient Greece with the impact slavery has had around the world.

Spanish
In Spanish, we have been learning a range of animals and using “yo tengo” to create sentences. The children have combined Spanish numbers, the verb to have, and their new vocabulary to build confident spoken sentences.
