Wharfe Class Writes the Ultimate Manual! (and Masters Multiples!)

Hello and welcome to the Wharfe Class blog! 👋

It's been another jam-packed week across all our subjects. We’ve been powering up our language skills, tackling tough numbers, and getting active outside!

English: The Art of Precise Instructions ✍️

We've been buzzing with activity in English this week, diving deep into the world of instructions and manuals. Forget about boring instruction booklets—we've been writing the guide for a truly magnificent machine: a Homework Generator!

The biggest challenge (and the most fun part) has been making sure our instructions are incredibly clear. To make our manuals the best they can be, we've been hunting for and using some fantastic strong verbs. These are the action words that tell the user exactly what to do, like Press, Twist, Insert, and Secure. Using these powerful verbs makes our steps exact and easy to follow.

Maths: Factors and Multiples Mania! 🔢

Our brains have been in full workout mode in Maths! We’ve been exploring the fantastic world of Factors and Multiples.

  • A multiple is what you get when you multiply a number by a whole number. For example, the multiples of 5 are 5, 10, 15, 20...
  • A factor is a number that divides exactly into another number. For example, the factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.

We've learned all sorts of tricks for finding these numbers quickly and have been solving problems that need us to use both skills at the same time. Remember that every number has at least two factors: 1 and itself!

Spelling: Stressing the 'r'! 📖

Our spelling focus has been a tricky one this week! We've been looking at what happens to words when we add a suffix (a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word) like -ing or -ed.

Specifically, we looked at words that end in -fer, such as refer. We found out that if the second syllable ('fer') is stressed when you say the word, you need to double the 'r' before adding the suffix.

  • re-FER → referring, referred
  • con-FER → conferring, conferred

P.E.: Balances and Ball Skills! 🏃

Out on the playground, we've been working hard on our physical skills.

  • In our balances work, we explored how to control our bodies, moving from low to high and creating interesting shapes while holding a steady balance. It takes a lot of core strength and focus!
  • We've also been getting stuck into Rugby. We worked on our passing and catching techniques and started to explore how to move the ball quickly as a team. We are practising safe tackling techniques and learning the importance of teamwork and communication.

Great work this week, Wharfe Class! Keep up the brilliant effort in all your subjects!
