Wharfe Class Chronicles: A Knightly and Poetic Adventure! 🛡️📜
We've been absolutely buzzing with activity here in Year 6, tackling everything from challenging maths to epic legends and fantastic poetry. Get ready to dive into what we've been up to!
🎤 Poetry Power with Michael Rosen
This week, we've become mini-poets! We've been delving into the wonderful world of Michael Rosen's poetry. We read and loved his energetic performance style, focusing on how he uses rhythm, repetition, and sound effects to make his poems come alive.
This exploration led up to Poetry Day where we had a blast writing our own poems. The highlight was adapting Michael Rosen's classic, We're Going on a Bear Hunt. We wrote our own Year 6 versions featuring our absolute favourite foods! Instead of a bear, we were hunting for everything from giant pizzas to endless chocolate fountains! We even got to perform our noisy, messy, and hilarious poems in assembly, complete with all the actions and sound effects! The audience absolutely loved our culinary adventures!
➗ Master Builders of Maths: Division
In Maths, we've been building up our division skills. We've been working hard on both long and short division, learning the formal methods to divide three and four-digit numbers.
- Short Division (The Bus Stop Method): Great for quicker calculations!
- Long Division (The Step-by-Step Method): Perfect for larger numbers and understanding how the remainder works.
It was tricky at first, but with lots of practice, we're becoming experts at sharing equally and dealing with those tricky remainders!
🏰 Tales from Camelot and Magical Inventions
Our topic work has taken us back to the age of knights and legends—to Camelot! We've been reading all about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Our focus has been on developing our descriptive writing by imagining we are there.
We used fantastic vocabulary to describe:
- The gleaming, fortified walls of the castle.
- The thundering sound of hooves in the jousting arena.
- The heavy, ornate banners fluttering in the wind.
This topic inspired us to become inventors! We got creative and designed our own magical objects that would fit perfectly into the world of Arthurian legend. We created detailed plans for amazing items like:
- The Potion of Strength: A bubbling elixir that gives the drinker the might of a giant!
- The Orb of Light: A crystal sphere that banishes all shadows and reveals hidden truths.
We are so proud of the fantastic ideas we came up with. Maybe one day, they'll become part of a real legend!
We're looking forward to even more amazing learning next week!
