A Week of Reflection and Superpowers in Wharfe Class!
Hello everyone, and welcome back to the Wharfe class blog. It has been an incredibly busy and thought-provoking week for our Year 6s, filled with powerful history, creative writing, and some impressive mathematical discoveries.
A Solemn Commemoration On Tuesday, Wharfe class had the great honour of being invited to the Cathedral to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. It was a very sombre and special service, giving us all a chance to reflect on the past and think about the importance of kindness and unity today. We would like to say a massive well done to all the children; your behaviour was exceptional, and you represented our school with such maturity and respect. We were incredibly proud of you all!
Maths: Making Sense of Percentages Back in the classroom, we’ve been diving into the world of percentages. We have been learning the secrets of how to find percentages of different amounts and, more importantly, how they link to what we already know about fractions. Ask the children if they can tell you the fractional equivalent of 50% or 25%—they are becoming real experts at spotting those connections!
English: Calling All Heroes and Villains! Our creative juices have been flowing in English as we begin drafting our very own pages for the book '101 Things to Do to Become a Super Hero or Super Villain'. From secret gadgets to elaborate training montages, the ideas have been fantastic. We are now ready to take everything we’ve learnt about persuasive and instructional writing to create our own final, wonderful pieces of work. Stay tuned for some "super" results!
Scarlett said, “I loved creating my own superhero. She is called Lightning Lady and she has a 1940s style. A terror in tweed!"
Learning Means the World: The Legacy of Nelson Mandela In our 'Learning Means the World' sessions, we have been captivated by the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela. The children have been learning about his incredible resilience during his 27 years in captivity and the impact of his fight against inequality. We even spent some time listening to the powerful protest music of that era.
A huge "high five" to those who shared their independent research with the class this week. Your presenting skills were top-notch, and it was wonderful to see you teaching each other with such enthusiasm.
Staying Safe Online Finally, we have been looking closely at Internet Safety and how to navigate the digital world securely. It is such an important skill to have, and we’d love for the children to keep the conversation going at home. If you have a spare moment, why not have a go at the 'Interland' game together? It’s a fun way to test your skills!
