Spa Class Blog

This week we added some Spa-rkle to our classroom to prepare for Christmas!
Our week started off very excitingly in English, our lost poster for Hoctopize’s toy Cuddles worked and it turned up in our classroom! We continued reading “Toys in Space” - our words of the week were “reunited” and "abandoned". We created a big story map together showing what happened in the book. Daisy remembered that the toys were “beamed up”, Sophie added that the “toys went up to space” and Jaxon said “they go back to their homes”. Later in the week we designed our own aliens based on the book. Robyn described her alien as "a fluffy alien. He has cuddles!", Sienna said her alien "has five eyes" and Daisy said her aliens were "visiting the silly alien shop". This week we shared books about Mr Christmas, Room on the Broom and a dragon called Marmaduke!
In Phonics we learnt the phoneme ‘n’ for net, nose and nurse! Our nursery rhyme was Row, row, row your boat. Everyone enjoyed singing the nursery rhyme, especially when we saw the crocodile..! On this week’s visit with Bertha the Bus, we saw a net!
At the start of the week in maths we learnt about fixing problems in A B patterns. We read patterns and worked out how they were going wrong! The children found out that you could swap things around in a pattern to make it correct - we also learnt a fun action to help remember how to swap things around. Later in the week we explored A B C patterns. The children worked really hard making their A B C repeating patterns using mathematical materials as well as outdoor objects such as pinecones and conkers.
In RE we continued learning about why Christians perform Nativity plays at Christmas. We talked about why we write letters to celebrate events such as birthdays and Christmas. Theo said it was to "invite people over" and Jaxon said it was "to celebrate with family!". We are looking forward to our Christmas Show this Friday 12th December, we hope it will spread a lot of Christmas cheer!
This week in Learning Means the World we learnt about games and ‘old-fashioned’ toys. We enjoyed having a large snakes and ladders game in our tuff tray, this not only helped with number identification but also turn taking. In our Curiosity Cube this week we had a wind-up penguin, a dinosaur push puppet and a wooden spinning top. We discussed how all the toys moved, Jacob said "when you turn it, it spins" about the spinning top and Noah said the dinosaur push puppet "wobbles by itself. Very hard.". We also talked about the materiality of the toys, and how they are different from toys we usually get now. Rosie said "the penguin is plastic and hard", Noah added "it moves by itself" and Theo said "they're hard like a stick. It's wooden". We have also enjoyed decorating the classroom for Christmas, it is all looking very festive in Spa Class!
