Skell Class Blog
Skell Class enjoyed spending time in the big playground after lunch this week. They have played with new friends and brothers and sisters and the big play equipment!
In English, we read the information book ‘People Who Help Us.’ We talked about the different people who help us – Police Officers, Firefighters, Doctors, Dentists, Nurses and Teachers. We wrote a list together. We then thought about some of the jobs our parents do. ‘My Dad is a Window Cleaner,’ said Cooper, ‘He cleans people’s windows.’ ‘My Dad is a Dentist, ‘ said Tommy. We have thought about how the Police and Firefighters help us and have made information posters.
In Maths, we have been looking at the composition of numbers and focussing on the concept of wholes and parts. We looked at toys made of different parts and talked about how many parts there were to make the whole toy. We thought about our bodies. ‘My head is a part of me, the whole of me is Ivy.’ We looked at number block two being made of the parts one and one and the whole would be two.
In Phonics, we have been looking at graphemes ff, ll, ss, j. We know that two letters that make one sound are called a digraph. We have identified the digraphs in words and the initial ‘j’ in words. We have been practising letter writing and have continued to practice the tricky words ‘is, I, the’ We have sounded out and blended words such as huff, bell, fuss, jet. We have read simple captions, such as ‘a red hat,’ and written cvc words, such as cat, bed, ten.
In Learning Means the World we have started our new unity of work, ‘Let’s Play.’ We have looked at toys that the teachers used to play with and talked about how they look a bit different to the toys the children play with now. We have also looked at toys from around the world, such as stacking dolls from Russia and a Rubik's cube from Hungary.
Next week we would like children to bring in their favourite toy from home to share with the class on Wednesday 12th November.
In RE, we have started to look at the Christian Nativity story and thought about Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus. We talked about how Jesus was once a baby and who is the most important person in the story.
In provision, we have painted Police Officers and Firefighters, practised our cutting skills, built emergency vehicles, built a Police Station in the construction, and enjoyed being Police Officers in the role-play area. We have made our own information books, built toys using parts and completed matching games and jigsaws.
