Cultural Capital & SMSC

‘Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full. It must encourage

the Child’s respect for human rights, their parents, their own and other cultures,

and the environment.’

At Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School we understand Cultural Capital as the essential knowledge that our pupils need to be educated citizens, introducing them to the best that has been thought and said and helping to engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement. Cultural capital  at Trinity encompasses the essential knowledge, skills, and experiences—such as visits, learning music, or understanding diverse traditions—that our pupils draw upon to thrive academically and socially. It bridges background gaps, boosting social mobility by providing the "best that has been thought and said".

At Holy Trinity, we believe every child should experience a rich and varied education that goes beyond the classroom. Our vision that we ‘learn and flourish together’ where ‘each day opens up horizons of hope, aspiration and joy! is lived out through opportunities that inspire curiosity, and prepare children for the world beyond school.

Our cultural capital curriculum encompasses the planned activities that we as a school organise learning, personal growth and development. Our curriculum is designed to celebrate our local heritage whilst also opening up horizons to the global community our pupils will live and work within. At Trinity, we offer a wide range of inspiring, engaging and exploratory learning experiences, sparking excitement and wonder, giving children memorable experiences to connect with their learning.

Our curriculum offer is designed to build a multilayered cultural capital and take advantage of all that our city has to offer.  The city of Ripon, one of the oldest cities in England with a history stretching over 1,360 years, provides us with a rich ecclesiastical, miliary heritage alongside the expertise within our local and extended community to contextualise our pupils’ learning and broaden classroom-based learning. Trinity pupils benefit from carefully sourced visitors who volunteer to visit school (e.g. authors and local nurses, police officers, sports coaches, musicians and vets). At Trinity, we are active ensure our children take part in local events as custodians of their local heritage and understand the historical continuity of their city.

At Trinity, we are a welcoming community of faith with a diverse  community, we ensure that every child, regardless of background, is included in a range of opportunities and experiences, so they leave Trinity with the confidence, curiosity, and ambition to continue learning and growing.

At Trinity, we are a welcoming community of faith with a diverse community; we ensure that every child, regardless of background, is included in a range of opportunities and experiences, so they leave Trinity with the confidence, curiosity, and ambition to continue learning and thriving. As a global community, we are proud to welcome pupils from 21 different countries, with our classrooms echoing with the sounds of 23 different languages. Our pupils have the unique opportunity to learn first-hand from their peers, gaining insights into the traditions, languages, and beliefs of cultures from across the globe. This daily exchange enriches our school, fostering a deep sense of mutual respect and global citizenship. By celebrating our differences alongside our shared values, we ensure that every child at Holy Trinity gains an understanding of the world and the cultural fluency to thrive within it.

Through our rich Cultural Capital and Spiritual Moral Social Cultural  curriculum, we wrap experiences around members of our community which widen the lens through which they make sense of the world around them. As our pupils move through school, we are committed to developing not only academic standards and levels of achievement, but also their spiritual, moral, social and cultural awareness. We aim to provide opportunities for our pupils to form their own identity, sense of place and purpose, and give them the confidence to question and discover who they are in the world and face the exciting challenges that lie ahead. Being a church school adds another dimension to our SMSC provision as our Christian ethos and distinctiveness permeate all aspects of school life and underpins our values and mission.
