Statutory Assessments

Children are required to undertake a specific statutory assessments during their time at primary school. This section provides an overview of these assessments and links to the Department for Education website for more information.

Reception Baseline Assessment

Within the first 6 weeks of children arriving in Reception, they will be assessed to establish an accurate baseline from which we can measure progress. Guidance for parents/carers can be accessed here.

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

In June of Year 1, all children are assessed to establish whether they have acquired the expected phonetical knowledge. Guidance on what this check involves can accessed here.

Year 2 Phonics Check Resits

Children in Year 2 who had not acquired the expected phonetical knowledge by the end of Year 1 will resit the check in June of Year 2.

Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check

The National Curriculum specifies that all children should know multiplication facts to 12 x 12 by the end of Year 4. At the end of Year 4, the children take an online times tables check to assess whether they have achieved this. Children who have not learnt all multiplication facts to 12 x 12 receive intervention at the start of Year 5. Guidance on the Multiplication Tables Check can be accessed here.

Year 6 Standardised Attainment Tests (SATs)

In May of Year 6, all children carry out statutory assessments in Reading, Maths and GPS (Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling). These assessments are externally marked and assess the extent to which the children have achieved the expected standard by the end of their primary education. The outcomes of the assessments are shared with secondary schools, who use them to inform their starting points for Key Stage 3.

Writing is assessed by class teachers, who are moderated to ensure outcomes are accurate. Information on the Year 6 SATs can be found here.
